What all do I have wrong? Is Duane more lucid at night than we realize? Is it simply that it's not the presence of sun that keeps him sane? Could he be a lunatic? Emphasis on luna.

The only thing to take from that response is that Duane's "periods of inactivity" have nothing to do with sunlight. Anything further would be speculation.
Of course, it could be a reverse red herring, in which your assumptions are actually correct and the author is being koi.

I hope she's not being koi. Pymary doesn't work well in water. The way she worded that gives me pause. "No, that wouldn't work." That's what I expected. Instead she remarks upon assumptions. It's not sunlight that keeps him sane, that doesn't surprise me. But she seems to imply that I have made more than one assumption. Possibilities include what actually causes the insanity and what the insanity actually is. We haven't seen him at his "worst". Is it is worst? Or does he understand something in the nighttime that eludes him during the day? Sort of a Silver Chair scenario. If it's more inactivity than insanity, than does sunlight keep him going? Or does something about nighttime slow him down?
