Let's move skyward

Post by Terraem »

André Kuipers is a (Dutch) astronaut currently living in the ISS for scientific research. During his time there he found some time to make these amazing pictures, which I will share with you.

Image
Amsterdam and surroundings, on April 5 2012. Taken with a Nikon D3s 180 mm

Image
Sunny day in Haarlemmermeer, the Netherlands. This is where Schiphol, our airport, is and where I work.

Image
Haarlem, Ijmuiden. See the aircraft along the North Sea Canal. I can see the house where I've lived for 11 years from here.

Image
Muiden, Muiderslot, Naarden Vesting, Naardermeer, Almere, The Netherlands

Image
Europe by night. Dark down below and sun on the ISS. At this moment the ISS is visible from the ground

Moonset as seen from the ISS

Image
Ireland, Northern Ireland, Scotland, England, Wales

Image
Paris at night seen from space

Image
Sahara sand treks hundreds of kilometres across the Atlantic Ocean.

Image
Rotterdam, the Maasvlakte and the south of Holland.

London Town, night of April 5th

Image
ATV docked. Here you can see how the ISS and ATV use their rocket engines in a coordinated dance.

Please, feel free to share your own (from your adventures in space).

Almost thought this was a Skyward Sword thing but then I discovered that it's so much cooler.

Sometimes I find it a little frightening to see how the world looks like at night, seeing all those lights on.

To think that hundreds of years ago the world was just DARK at night.

Think of all the electricity and power and pollution it takes up.

The Trifid Nebula (catalogued as Messier 20 or M20 and as NGC 6514) is an H II region located in Sagittarius. Its name means 'divided into three lobes'. The object is an unusual combination of an open cluster of stars, an emission nebula (the lower, red portion), a reflection nebula (the upper, blue portion) and a dark nebula (the apparent 'gaps' within the emission nebula that cause the trifid appearance; these are also designated Barnard 85). Viewed through a small telescope, the Trifid Nebula is a bright and colorful object, and is thus a perennial favorite of amateur astronomers.

Resembling a flaming creature on the run, this image exposes the hidden interior of a dark and dusty cloud in the emission nebula IC 1396. Young stars previously obscured by dust can be seen here for the first time.
