The Martial Arts Thread of Asskickery
Re: The Martial Arts Thread of Asskickery
our Kendo school: 100something € per year, up to 4 lessons a week (2 of them only for advanced pupils so 1 or 2 per week for me) not bad. But I will only start again in September cause my feet hurt like hell from working.

Re: The Martial Arts Thread of Asskickery
I've taken karate classes many times before.
I stopped both times, though, as they tend to degenerate into dance classes once you get the basic moves down. Seriously, WHY is it so important that I remember this specific combination of techniques and can do it perfectly in that specific order? Wouldn't my time be better spent actually... you know, learning things that are actually relevant?

Most likely (at least that's what that is for in kendo) it is to build execution speed. Knowing moves doesn't do you any good if you execute them so slowly that every harebrained thug can counter them. And the specific order is probably because those are usually used in that order most effectively I guess?

Re: The Martial Arts Thread of Asskickery
There are better ways to train execution speed though. And I had to learn stuff like that as well, and the moves certainly weren't combined in the most effective manner, it was just simulating a fight against an imaginary opponent.
Re: The Martial Arts Thread of Asskickery
They didn't stress speed, only accurate memorization.D-vid wrote:Most likely (at least that's what that is for in kendo) it is to build execution speed. Also I don't really know a situation where I'd need to forward punch twice, turn to my right, upper block three times, turn again, do some more blocks, and then kick once.

Re: The Martial Arts Thread of Asskickery
I took Taekwondo when I was like 9 or 10, I only got up to yellow belt because I was a weenie and wanted to quit. I remember the test to get up to yellow belt was to break a board in half with your elbow, and I never did it but I passed based on "effort".
Nowadays, though, I'm really fascinated with anything martial arts related (Avatar: The Last Airbender, anyone?) so I'm thinking I'll get back into it. I signed up for a self-defense class next semester, I think I'll go through all the martial arts-related classes at the university just for fun.

I've been wanting to learn a martial art for a long time now. Either Jiu-Jitsu or something that doesn't require a huge amount of flexibility and/or agility. Possibly Judo? Something that favors strength and body size. >_>

I sort of want to learn judo too. That or aikido. Yeah aikido would probably work better for me.

Or you could just, you know. Take a realistic approach to something and expect to work on the rudimentary skills for a while and gradually get better, during the course of which you would gain the physique needed to be good at it.Sol Reaper wrote:I've been wanting to learn a martial art for a long time now. If you train in martial arts you'll become plenty strong and flexible. But if you're thinking of Ju-jitsu, make sure to read up on which school you're planning to attend, because there's a very large amount of Ju-jitsu styles that specialize in different things.Sol Reaper wrote:I've been wanting to learn a martial art for a long time now.
