THIS IS NOT A THREAD.
IT IS AN ADVENTURE
It was the sun that finally woke you up. The harsh glare beating down on your eyelids refused to be ignored any longer. Cautiously, you open your eyes, shielding them with one hand while they adjust to the afternoon sun. Blearily, you glance around to get your bearings. To the left…water. To the right…more water. Cupping your hand, you dip it below the surface and splash yourself. The salty water burns your eyes and clears the haze from your mind.
The ocean. You’re floating in the middle of the ocean. As soon as the realization hits you, a million questions form in your mind. First and foremost, How did I get here? Your mind struggles unsuccessfully to answer that one, then drops it in favor of What do I do now?
Treading water, you scan your surroundings for any sign of dry land. You spot a faint blur to the northeast. After a moment of hesitation, you set off for it, deciding that the sooner you get out of the open ocean, the better. Stroke after stroke, you forge your way through the endless waves to where you hope there’s dry land. As you continue, the waves begin to get choppy, splashing salt water into your face and eyes. Undaunted, you press on, looking up every now and then to see if the blur is any closer.
After a while, your arms and legs begin to burn. Each stroke becomes an effort, each kick dwindles what little is left of your strength. You pause for a while, treading water while you catch your breath. A quick glance tells you what you had already feared; the blur looks no closer now than it did when you started.
At that moment, something smooth brushes against your leg. Startled, you jerk your leg away and unsuccessfully scan the murky green water in search of the culprit. A little unsettled, you decide to resume swimming.
Something grabs your leg and jerks you underwater. Kicking furiously, you break its grip and burst to the surface, gasping for breath. Desperate, you begin to swim away, but a massive bulk slams into you from beneath. The force of the impact drives the breath from your lungs and throws you through the air.
Landing with a massive splash, you kick your way back to the surface, where you see your attacker for the first time. Its body is composed of gelatinous blue flesh, with two hardened lumps at the top shining like rubies and glaring at you like a second pair of eyes. As the tentacles thrashing the water around it suddenly shoot towards you, the only thought in your head is
NOW WHAT?

As the tentacles shoot towards you, you grab one and bite it. The creature jerks it backwards, nearly ripping your teeth from your mouth, but also dragging you with it. You let go of the tentacle in midair, draw back your fist as you fall and slam it into the monster's eye. The creature shrieks in pain, a horrible sound, like fingernails on a chalkboard. Before you even hit the water, a tentacle slams into your waist and and knocks you through the air. That worked well, you think, but he won't fall for it again. You think about what to do next. If you play dead he'll eat you. If you try to escape, he'll still eat you. As you ponder your options, a tentacle bursts out of the water behind you. Before it can attack, you dive underwater, deciding to escape.duhrdotcom wrote:>Search self for weapons/anything to aid you. If you can't find anything, dive under the water and hold your breath to make it seem like you've drowned.
Before you can get anywhere, you're pulled to a halt, dragged out of the water and into the air, where the monster glares furiously at you. Luckily, you realize that the monster has latched onto your backpack instead of your body. Slipping your arms out of the straps, you fall back into the water. Realizing what's happened, the monster flings the backpack at you.
Ducking underwater, you dodge the attack. Once you kick back to the surface, you realize that the backpack might hold something that can help you fight. Quickly stroking over to it, you rifle through the main pocket, but all that's in it are small, round balls that look like toys. You grab one anyway, but a tentacle bursts out of the water and wraps around your waist.
As you struggle to break free, you feel a hot, stabbing pain where it grabbed you. In desperation, you hurl the ball at the monster's head. To your surprise, the ball strikes it directly in the forehead. The ball bursts open, and with a flash of light, the monster is gone.
Panting with exhaustion, you feel the pain from where it grabbed you spreading through your veins like liquid fire. Your vision becomes blurry, and just before it goes completely black, you wonder, What next?

A strange beeping noise wakes you up. Looking around the room, you notice medical accessories and a girl in a nurse's uniform sitting in a chair in the corner. You try to sit up, but your head suddenly feels light, and colored lights dance in front of your eyes. Your movement causes the nurse to look up, and she smiles.duhrdotcom wrote:>Dive back down for the ball. It looked helpful in some way.
"Looks like you're finally awake."
"...."
"You shouldn't try to move much. The toxins haven't cleared out of your system yet."
Choosing to ignore her, you try to sit up again. For your effort, you are rewarded by the sudden urge to throw up.
"Stop that. You haven't fully recovered. Trying to move before you have will just spread the toxins through your system. You need to lay down and rest."
This time you obey her and lay down.
"That's better. I bet you're hungry, aren't you? You've been asleep for two days, after all. Stay here and I'll get you some food."
Food sounds good, so you smile and nod. The nurse leaves the room, and returns sometime later with soup that smells absolutely wonderful. You feel better just smelling it.
After the food (you insisted on feeding yourself) you decide to go back to sleep. The nurse smiles, turns out the lights and leaves the room.
After two more days, you've recovered enough to stand and walk. As such, you decide that it's time to leave. Donning your clothes, you leave a Thank You note to the nurse and walk out the room for the first time. To your surprise, you find yourself on a ship's deck. The stars are twinkling above and you're in a good mood. Curiosity gets the better of you, and you decide to explore.
As you snoop around, you hear voices coming from the captain's room. Putting your ear to the door, you hear two voices: The nurse's, and a gruff one you don't recognize.
"He hasn't told us anything about himself."
"He doesn't need to, poor lad. He's a Trainer, by the looks of him."
"Do you think he knows anything?"
"I do. But for now, let him rest. We'll start questioning him tomorrow. You can start by asking his name."
"To think that there would be only one survivor- did you hear something?"
Quickly and silently, you dash around the corner. You hear the door creak open and the nurse's voice say "I guess it was nothing."
Breathing a sigh of relief, you tiptoe away. After a bit more snooping, you find two lifeboats attached to the ship. You take one, and row until the ship is out of sight. After about an hour, you spot land nearby. By the time you reach it, your arms feel like lead. Wading through the shallows, you drag the boat onto the beach, then collapse, exhausted, on the sand.
After a while, you muster the strength to stand up. As you turn to leave, something catches your eye. Turning back towards the water, you see a pale ball, reflecting moonlight, washed up in a shallow pool. Wading in, you reach down and grab it.
To your surprise, you recognize it as the ball you threw at the creature. After some consderation, you put it in your backpack and set off for the nearby city lights. As you set off, you ponder the conversation you overheard. What did she mean,"only survivor"? And there was the thing that had been nagging you ever since you left the ship. They had wanted your name. But...you couldn't remember your name, or anything else, for that matter. And more importantly, what were you going to do next?
