They seem to be using a pentatonic scale (meaning there's five degrees of pitch in each set). It creates a really cool open movement feeling, and also helps to avoid clashing notes, since the kind of scale that they're using doesn't have any harsh dissonances to it.

Also it wouldn't be that hard to align the lines, all you need is a laser thingie or a spotlight.
