I think it's seaweed or something

But who cares if it's sort of ambiguous, it's still clearly food

The doughnuts are just hidden inside the rice balls.

Out of all the stupid and downright insulting changes 4kids has made with their dubbings, the rice ball thing is one of the least stupid.

It is just localization, guys. It's no different than how Phoenix Wright apparently takes place in America according to the translation despite the fact it clearly does not. It isn't like the fact that they are eating rice balls is crucial to the story.

Although, I admit, just calling it a doughnut and not even bothering to change how they actually look is pretty daisies stupid and lazy.

4Kids does some stupid stuff.

The rice ball edits are the stupidest ones by far.

Mention 'riceballs' or 'sticky rice' to anyone and they know what you're talking about.

I rmember as a kid thinking "What kind of doughnuts are those?"

I would have gotten rice ball perfectly fine, it would've even made things less confusing.

That'd be black icing or a burn streak?

And you need to post pictures of it when she does.

nah she wouldn't do it. it's not like she can just make whatever she wants, it has to actually sell and crap.

but if I ever figure out how to make doughnuts properly i'd do it. jelly-filled, even.

When I was a kid, I just figured they were powdered donuts and the black things were so you didn't get powder on your fingers

Chinmaster also answered this

To be more accurate, it is called "nori". Nori is dried seaweed which is really rich in several minerals and vitamins which is essensial for the human body.
