Well it is a Wii game, and shaking the Wiimote and stuff like that is supposed to be the point. Adding button attacks would just make it confusing like that ToS game for the Wii.

I haven't played the first game, so I don't know if the dog spirit was female and this puppy is supposed to be her offspring or something.

Amaterasu Okami, the wolf from the first game, was bodaciously the goddess of the sun. So yeah, the new one might be some sort of offspring. Especially since it has the marks of the gods (y'know, those red stripes).
Oh, and Okamiden's said to take place after the original.

Does that mean the wood sprite is also The other sprite's (can't remember her name) offspring? Or just her taking another form?

She was both female, and had no gender.

As a goddess of Japanese mythology, and like all gods and goddess of Japanese mythology, they have no gender. They are simply called gods or goddesses with regards to whether they are feminine or masculine.
