Things that piss you off
It was actually pretty dark sometimes. During the first season there was not too much dark stuff save A rebel destroying a whole town and the whole save some vs all thing
The second season was very dark near the end. And the third season had some of the best jokes and was also extremely dark Katara nearly killed a man. There was a waterbender that bloodbended people. Aang kept being told he had to kill the Firelord. etc. etc.

Snarf's right. I think that Avatar is a proper example that just because a show is meant for a younger audience doesn't mean that it cannot be serious.
Upbeat isn't really the right way to describe it. Aang doesn't act seriously for a long period of time, but this is because he's childish and naive. As time goes on, he begins to understand the gravity of the situation, and becomes more mature as a result.
