Well I was reading Wiki and it appears that at one point they wanted Goofy to not be Goofy. Walt Disney had him changed so that he was more human with a family and heightened intelligence. This is in the 50's, Goofy was officially dubbed with the name "George Geef"
Some cartoons made him altogether too human with no floppy ears and different voice:

Here's another one where he is with his family, it uses a more traditional looking goofy. I love this one because it pokes fun at how bad men are at housework, bad female driving, and obvious cheating (in the wifes part...with three men):

On a side note, Goofy's first official name back from when he was first created was "Dippy Dawg"
