There is none. My brother once reached a recorded 39,000 km/h ski due to a certain bug. The speed indicator stops at 650, but player speed has no limit. You would be hard pressed to reach 600 without crushing yourself against one of the map boundaries, of course.

Patch coming up next week. What do you think it'll contain?

Hopefully there's a sentinel nerf.
I feel that sentinels are just the odd one out in the game.
Every single other class you fight is a direct competition of skill and speed. With SEN, it's his skill and whether or not he can see you. You also can't retaliate at all, just MAYBE lessen the amount of damage they do to you, depending upon how good they are.
And even if you do go and fight him, he's going to respawn in five seconds up on a secluded hillside looking on the majority of the battlefield while still being close to his base. so it's not worth it, because you could be capping or flagstand clearing or generhating or doing anything besides spending a minute or two flying to bumfuck nowhere to take out one person. It's a frustrating situation.

IMO, the sentinel is fine as it is. The maps are not. When I can see from one base to another, why the hell should I walk over to the other base to take out the defenders?

Have you noticed on the maps where you can't see much of the area how useless they are? Only good sentinels get kills then.

The issue I have with sentinels is that a highly skilled pathfinder can outrun pretty much everything, but a Sentinel can still get headshots on them. The Sentinel just doesn't feel like it fits in well with or is balanced for the usually fast paced action of the game. I know that heavies don't go fast either, but it's their job to stay still and defend or brutally attack. The Sentinel is light armored, which means that it should be suited for mobility, but most of it's job is just standing still and popping shots off.

Map design won't fix the Sentinel at all. Players will always spawn in high locations close to their base so that they can build speed quickly and relatively safely, and Sentinels will always stand on these high locations and snipe people because they naturally make ideal sniping locations with a convenient view of the flag stand. The only way you could make a map in which a newly spawned Sentinel could not snipe an escaping flag runner the instant he respawned would be if every single spawn put him behind his base, and the flag stand curved up into a C-shaped half pipe that allowed cappers to leave in the exact opposite direction that they took the flag.

If respawn times were longer, people would actually be able to lock Sentinels out of the action by killing them. If all players spawned in a base loadout like every other Tribes game, they would have to visit a (powered) Inventory Station to resume sniping. If the Phase Rifle was the standard weapon and the BXT with its ridiculously forgiving firing rate and essentially cost-free resource system simply didn't exist...

Well, then we'd have something a hell of a lot closer to the Tribes 1 snipers. And they were fair.

There is one thing Tribes 1 had that Tribes Ascend doesn't have and that is fog. This has been brought up numerous times on the Tribes forum. There are also other ways to make it more difficult to snipe. Place actual obstacles around the map so you can't see the entire map from any one position. After all, having a sniper and not being able to see further than 100 meters would restrict its use to areas where it is important that the sniper is around.

Wide open maps are a staple of T:A. So changing that won't help.

The problem is you need to make the phase rifle the base gun and the other one the purchased one. At this point in time the best thing is to counter snipe. Its not ideal but that's the only thing you can really do.

Aside from Sentinels, I think Shrikes are a big pain as well.

I've also seen the ski marker go up to 900 or so before, when I fell off the map of Temple Ruins.

The issue I have with the Shrike is that there are not enough counters to it. The Doombringer's Saber Launcher is good, but if you're a pathfinder with the flag, and a shrike's on your tail, you can't do anything.

I also hate the Falcon pistol for the Sentinel. It pretty much eliminated their close ranged weakness.

I have been practicing as the Sent and I suck at sniping.

How to counter a Shrike pilot:
1. Buy a Shrike.
2. Fire your useless, slow-traveling weapon at him.
3. Give up and crash into it, destroying both Shrikes instantly.
4. Camp the enemy vehicle pad as an Infiltrator, stick the Shrike when your target buys a second one.

How to counter a Sentinel:
1. Wait for the Sentinel to find an important target.
2. Shoot him in the back with a non-lethal weapon.
3. Don't kill him, just waste his time dodging the Falcon while your cappers actually make progress because he's distracted.

This is how it's done, my friends.
