Sorry to say, but that won't work. The only retail game I know of that can be activated through Steam and doesn't use Steamworks to begin with is Unreal Tournament 3. Just add it as a non-Steam game. It's basically the same anyway.

Write down the error code you get and Google it. It'll usually help you pinpoint the problem. My cousin was bluescreening because he had faulty network drivers, but it only showed up at my house because he was sharing an IP address with me. There's also the off chance you could have two video card drivers installed, etc. But, if it's hardware related, then yeah. You are screwed.
