Re: The Legend of Zelda
I was never very scared of Dead Hand at all, I just sort of. Walked into the room, saw it, fought it, and beat it.
Silent Realns in Skyward Sword, though? Eueueghhh I believe those are genuinely awful game design. I'm gonna download a save file to skip them at some point because I'm not dealing with 'em.

Re: The Legend of Zelda
I wouldn't write them off as bad game design (except maybe that one drop in Eldin area that you can easily miss), because they're pretty interesting as a concept, especially since you're not running around an area you're unfamiliar with (something I kinda disliked about the Ocean Temple in PH), but rather being tested in a kind of larger, timed puzzle that breaks up the gameplay a bit.
The problem is that the execution is stressful to people like me even if the feeling of completing it is great to have. Or maybe it just isn't to people's taste. Or maybe it's too difficult to people.
But I would consider that personal taste on the matter, not necessarily a design flaw.

When I beat the first Silent Realm, my heart was beating so fast I could feel it in my nose, plus my limbs were so weak from relief I actually had to sit down.
...Clarification on the first part of that sentence: I wear glasses that pinch the bridge of my nose just enough so that I can feel me heart beating there if it's going fast enough.

Different things for different people. Scary thing that happened to me was in one of the Metroid Primes. Something glitched while going through a door and getting attacked by a Metroid at the same time. Wound up having an invisible, intangible Metroid sucking the life out of me. Which brings me back to the invisible rats in TP. Who jumped a little when they turned on their Wolf Vision?

WHERE IS THIS MERLIN I KEEP HEARING OF
What harm could come from imprisoning a hellinternet beast every night and making it hate humanity and what it stands for?
Then we can release it back into the wild.

Re: The Legend of Zelda
Oh it just grabs your head huh
Then a huge mass of white with a long neck, a head that almost always is looking upwards, pointy, stubby arms, and occasional red splotches on its body comes out of the floor (which is made of skulls) and slowly inches towards you
Then it bends over and you see its horrible skull-booty face
Then its mouth stretches to 3x its normal size and it nearly botes your fucking head off
And the entire time you're being held in place by a long, dead arm with long, red fingernails and you're completely and utterly helpless
How is that not terrifying
I think why I find Dead Hand scary is because its more of a psychological thing. I hate pointless jump scares (unless you absolutely can not see them coming).

Omni I couldn't play MP for years because any time Metroids would latch onto me I would just freak the fuck out and be scared out of my mind. Like I'd be breathing heavy and get a cold sweat (I think I was like 12 or something)
Then there was that effect in the game where if a bright light went off near Samus you'd see her eyes reflected in her visor. That one scared me less but it still freaked me the fuck out.

Or, y'know, whatever.

Re: The Legend of Zelda
I've good survival instincts apparently. Something scary appears and my freakout reaction is to hit it with my most powerful weapon as a reflex. There is a chance for splash damage in many games, but that's why I prefer swords.

Upon reaching the hallway where you walk past all the metroids, I started having a serious panic attack, because I'd played Zero Mission and they were horrible and I hated them.
Then you reach the room where you obviously have to cut power.
then the ice missiles didn't work
then i turned the wii off and didn't play the game for a few months

Re: The Legend of Zelda
I wrote a comic about having to cut the power, but we're talking about the wrong game now. Although the spinny dervish blade plant thing in Ocarina of Time has some similar panic inducing properties. The Peahat? Hahah, it sleeps at night and I'll stab it...Fuckfuckfuckfuckdinsfirefuck.
