Because top lane champs and junglers are incredibly interchangeable. There's probably a reason why, but I'm not smart enough to extrapolate it.

I'd say it's probably because the other roles are already so defined. Mid is generally a spellcaster (usually AP), and then bot is an AD carry and a support

Top and jungle seem like they sort of fill whatever niche the team wants to do for the mid-to-late game. Want a traditional comp? Get a couple tanks/bruisers in top/jungle. High damage? Stick another carry in one of those slots. Mega-cc? Top or jungle will probably go heavy utility.

But then I'm probably barely silver league so what the fuck do I know

That's exactly what I mentioned what's so wrong with people.

Nasus was designed as top lane. People jungle him.
Alistar and Taric are designed as supports. People jungle them.
Quinn was designed as adc. People play her as bruiser.
Annie was designed as AP nuker. People play her as support.
Sona was designed as support. People play her AP and adc.
Malzahar was designed as AP. People play him AD.
Wukong was designed as bruiser. People play him AD burst.

And if you honestly want to bring up this argument that Vi was designed solely for jungling, then sorry, but you're wrong. She was also designed as a top lane choice.


Also, that's what tanks are made for. To be tanky. To survive all the hits. To bring utility for teamfights, and MAYBE deal a bit of damage themselves (depending which guy you have). You are supposed to allow your team to dish out the damage and keep them safe.
And by your logic, Garen isn't even allowed to exist. He is a tank, and he a) buys crit b) doesn't exactly deal much damage in teamfights, compared to your actual damage dealers.

But Garen can't die. 20% more armor/MR, free warmog's passive, and a total damage reduction ability.

Also, on the subject of unconventional roles, you know what grinds my gears? The fact that so many supports could do so well in other roles, but they can't because they just don't have the stats to be in a solo lane/jungle.

Blitz, Alistar, and Leona would be such great junglers. Lulu could be a good mid or toplaner. Taric would be a great toplane bruiser.

A few like Janna can make it in mid lane, but otherwise, I feel like there's just so much wasted potential. I really hope they change the way supports get their gold income and find ways to give them more options.

Alistar IS played as a jungler, and it works really well. Sure you don't see it often, but Alistar support is played rarely nowadays too... But I digress. Boots of Mobility, Shurelya's, and his Q+W combo are so goddamn scary.

While i also like running top vi, people prefer her in the jungle because vi has incredible kill potential in her ganks.
She has 2 displaces and a decent amount of burst in the process, in and ideal situation she can pretty much guarantee a kill whenever her ults up, something people don't want to waste by having her sit top lane for the first 25 minutes of the game.
