Wouldn't surprise me if you required a retina scan to log in in the future, with all the hacking and stuff going on. Maybe voice recognition and finger prints on top of that.

It's been a long time since I played.

I have to ask, if my items are all gone, what can be done about it?

I don't remember at all what items I had on my characters.

Would they give me some basic gear for me to build up my items again?

Depends how long ago you quit, I think they only keep records for so long... You could always armory your character and see if his gear is gone, or if there has been any activity.

Well according to armory, both my main characters still have their items.

Which is a huge relief. Maybe they managed to close it before who ever was on it deleted my items.

Blizzard wants to give the players all the awesome moves at level 10, so that new players will stay a bit longer, and veterans will complain because there are no cool spells at high end level.

No, but I kind of like the idea of giving some signature moves earlier in the leveling grind.

So I finally ended up doing MC with some pals after many failed attempts, great run we made ragnaros look like a sissy in a fiery skirt and then the Judgement leggings dropped. Note, I have been wanting these since I paid 30 bucks for my WoW chest.
