Maybe at low-level tournaments with scrubs, but I'd think at high-level people that people would commend you for playing an unpopular character. Of course you'd probably get steam-rolled there unless you're more into the Brawl scene than I think? But I'd go for watching really. Most of this is speculation on my part of course, I've never actually been and there's always gonna be assholes.

Haha, sorry man but it's pretty ignorant. The breeding ground for these "smashboards assholes" is Smashboards and a few other Smash communities that have too many members to be moderated effectively. The breeding grounds for the arrogant people saying "UGH I HATE TIERS THEY ARE FOR FAGS" is the rest of the internet.
Nobody will blame you for playing a lower-tiered character (except if you do so for attention). If someone in a tournament tells you that you should play a "better" character, it means two things:
-either that he thinks you shouldn't handicap yourself and that you could show your talent in a better way through a character that has an easier time;
-either that he thinks you're not good with the basics of the game, and it's always easier to learn these with a relatively good character.
Tiers exist and matter, whether you want them to or not, because a tournament is a competitive environment. If you're interested in some competition, you're better off either accepting that, or simply not caring about them. Doing otherwise (challenging them or bashing them) is risky and may get players to regard you as ignorant.
Not all tournaments are for top players though. Local or weekly/ monthly tournaments are good because the stakes are often low enough that the atmosphere is really relaxed. It's your best bet if you wanna level up your game with no stress, or have fun with some more challenge and a more "serious" mindset. A lot of events have side-tournaments for mid-tier or low-tier (and under) characters too, so that'd be good for you if you play Samus - no worries about facing a Falco (this char kind of tears Samus up). Heck, if you look hard enough, I'm sure there are tournaments that allow items around to spice things up. Not to forget 2 vs 2 tournaments, these are more rare but very interesting and it's rewarding to work well with a team mate.
Some kids there may be pretentious or stupid but you'll find these guys everywhere in life.
Samus is a really interesting character, by the way, if very challenging to play as (33rd out of 38 characters). Fortunately, on average, the match-ups against other characters aren't too lopsided, especially since MetaKnight is banned now. You should take a look at matches from Gemini, a very solid French Samus player. Look' em up on YouTube, he does sick stuff with her.

I dunno man; maybe if you want to play a few casual games with items on.
I play Super Smash Bros. for fun; I'm really not interested in tourneys or tiers or items being turned off.
It might be difficult to catch each other for a game though because we're in different geographical timezones, Idk.

There's a double team using Ness and Lucas right now. They're awesome.
I was curious, so I looked up some matches an Youtube. They're fucking excellent. If they coordinated their projectiles a little better, they'd be unstoppable.
I've been playing mad amount of Melee lately. There's a gamecube in the lounge at the dorms and one of the RAs is insanely good at Smash Bros, and he made everyone crazy trying to beat him. (note that this paragraph contains the words "mad," "insane," and "crazy"--this is exactly how I feel about the entire situation)
EDIT: I guess it was kind of stupid to not include the
link to the video I was watching.
