Related to the thing about animals, unrelated to sentience/sapience (whose definitions vary and are argued over often) it's conclusive that basically everything with a spine is capable of at least rudimentary emotion and thought and can experience pain in a manner comparable to human pain. Some more than others, obviously-- fish aren't as stupid as some people think, but they are also on the lowest end of the ladder in terms of how sophisticated their emotions/sensations and sense and pain are, with reptiles next up, then mammals and birds. For example, dogs have no sense of self in regards to things like the mirror test, but are capable of developing clinical depression in a manner highly comparable to humans, among other disorders, and have a wide range of emotions and simple 'thought' processes that are easy to identify with and recognize as meaningful, if unsophisticated.

There is a difference between "sentience" and "sapience".

Sentient is almost always used when the latter is what is meant.
