It does make me pop flyin' that I only really have one female friend where I have to deal with period shenanigans.

Really, besides the general "bluh, I don't feel good" that accompanies the menstruation itself, I've found that most women play up the whole PMS thing. Either that, or the men talking about them do. PMS in most cases just changes your mood so that you're more likely to get frustrated, not psychotic.

Pheremones and hormones. Humans pick up on a lot more than the conscious mind can tell.

I just get a bit grumpy during my period. It's mainly the cramps.

Like what Madican said, humans give off pheromones. When females are consistently in a group with each other, their pheromones will interact with each other's hormones (kind of like how they do between partners for physical attraction). When one or more individuals gives off more pheromones or otherwise overpower the other ones, the individuals' hormones end up all kind of shifting to follow the "alpha" cycle.

(It's in no way voluntary, if you for some reason were thinking that.)

My mom had the same thing happen to her in sorority in college. Don't think she was the 'alpha' though.
