If I remember correctly, there's an old Jewish tradition where the newly weds would have sex in white sheets and show off the bloodied sheets to show that the wife was a virgin. Not sure what would happen if the sheets weren't bloodied.

Also, a hymen can vary in shape so much that it can stay mostly intact after intercourse, or be hard to find in general, if its small enough. So determining virginity from looking at the hymen is a pretty outdated idea.

I'm more inclined to agree with the psychological definition of "virginity" than the physical one. After all, the human race has evolved to a point where physical issues are pretty well malleable where a lot of things that were an issue back then are just "meh..." today. Sex has also become more emotional than physical. Even with respect to reproduction (since mankind has just up and slapped that in the face with its dick of "I don't have to give a shit") man has taken sex from a physical necessity to an emotional recreation. So I fully agree when someone says that when you're raped, of you have a self service (whether intentional or not), you're not really losing your virginity. Sex now has become more the feeling you get when you share "those feelings" with "that special someone".

Of course, there are exceptions. You're not a virgin if you go out and sleep with a bunch of people "but none of them meant anything so it's OK", you're just a slut.

Well yeah, there are always going to be the people who wince at the simple idea of holding hands, I'm more talking about the idea that sex has become more than just the physical act of "dick in vagina", so the psychological aspect certainly needs its place.

that sounds awful to me. Emotional intimacy is where its at.

I've never had the urge for physical intimacy. Found all I needed in emotional bonds, familial or otherwise.

Also, college couples are the most awkward thing ever to walk in on in the common lounge. Basically a full on make-out on the couches sometimes.
