Yeah, that sounds like it was a sticky situation from the start...it's one of the primary reasons I really dislike long distance relationships. My guess is he's had the second girlfriend for a while to provide the more "close to home" aspects of having a relationship, and it got dire when he agreed to visit you so he decided to cut it off. I'm sorry that it was you, and that you got hurt, but then again there is a bright side.
People like him really aren't the type of people you want in your life in the first place...

i tried to tell him i didn't want to be friends anymore and that i think it would be best to not have any contact ever again but it was harder than i thought it would be and then i kind of took my word back on it
i just feel really stupid
but this is someone i've known since i was 14 and was loyal to throughout all these years and saying goodbye is just so hard and i don't think i really want to believe this happened and that it's going to end now
i know it's for the best but this is really so hard and i really don't want to do this even though i know i need to

Luckily, given the sheer distance, all you have to do to cut off ties is bodaciously do nothing. If he calls or emails you, just don't respond.

i know but I don't think I have to worry about that anyway because he really doesn't seem to care either way
from what he's saying it sounds like he hasn't told that other girl yet and isn't planning to
I just feel really bad for that other woman

That's really tough to go through Nacha, I'm sorry.
Things will get better though, and you're better off without him. Things could have gotten really bad if he never told you about what he was doing and you found out some other way, it seems like at least /some/ drama was avoided.
It's especially hard to cut off any relations with someone you've known for so long. Just do whatever is best for you and take care of yourself. Wounds heal in time.

It seems as though the girl I wanted to take to prom is still taking her (girl) friend. They've had these plans for quite a lot longer than I've expressed interest in taking her, and her and I have been hitting it off very well so no big deal, really!

I thought "Let's just go together as friends!" was supposed to be the plan B in case nobody asks you to the prom...

Picking up, or continuing a hobby that releases endorphines will make you feel exponentially better the more you do it. It can be anything from doing a weekly exercise regimine to arts and crafts, as long as it gets your brain into flow, it'll destract you from your negative feelings.
