It can be really hard to do that kinda thing in person. One way I've found that can make it easier is to maybe hang out with him alone for the day and do some fun stuff, and maybe try to gear a conversation later in the day towards that (Of course this works best if you're already friends with the guy)

Then there's always telling him somehow over the internet in a chat of some sort. That can be much easier for obvious reasons, but might be a little weird when transitioning to real life.
