This is a petition where they will possibly remove the "In God" in the Pledge of Allegiance and the "In God we Trust" from currency.
Discuss formally like fine ladies and gentlemen.

As an atheist, I have no opinion on this matter.

Re: The Current Events Thread
As an Atheist as well, it just seems smart. Not because "Ugh I'm Atheist there is no God why do I have to say/look at it all the time." It's the fact that there are so many larger religions that do not believe in the big Christian god. Religions are far more spread out, and it's just something that feels, kind of right, in this day and age. Also the factor of separating Church from State.

Re: The Current Events Thread
Part of me understands that this is a multi-religious country, however the other part of me is still kinda clinging to the fact that this country was founded on Christianity

Re: The Current Events Thread
Most Western countries are, yet they don't cling to it as much as the US does. Also there was a "We the People" version of this and the government did their typical condescending talk that translated into "no because we don't want to piss off our religious voters".

Re: The Current Events Thread
It should be remembered that the majority of this country is Christian.

Take this news as you will, but if this is a purely popular decision, then it seems this is still one nation under God.Religion is much more important to Americans than to people living in other wealthy nations. Six-in-ten (59%) people in the U.S. say religion plays a very important role in their lives. This is roughly twice the percentage of self-avowed religious people in Canada (30%), and an even higher proportion when compared with Japan and Western Europe. Americans’ views are closer to people in developing nations than to the publics of developed nations.
Re: The Current Events Thread
Maybe America should stop trying to claim it has complete separation of church and state then.

Re: The Current Events Thread
I can never trust polls too much. In a country as large as America, there is just no way for anyone to accurately say "this percentage of people think this way".

There are too many new people on here.

Re: The Current Events Thread
There is no such thing. It's not mentioned in any part of our Constitution, it's just something secular people like to bring up to suppress Christian sentiment in politics.Syobon wrote:Maybe America should stop trying to claim it has complete separation of church and state then.
Re: The Current Events Thread
I thought there was some part of the Constitution that said something along the lines of "Congress shall make no law respecting an establishment of religion"?
Found it.

Re: The Current Events Thread
Yeah, that covers Congress.
Doesn't say anything about state governments making laws concerning religion, and it doesn't say anything about the executive or judicial branches having anything to do with religion. If Florida wants to make Rastafari the official state religion there's nothing prohibiting them from doing so.

Well excuse me if this sounds harsh, but that honestly sounds pretty bad.

Re: The Current Events Thread
No state is actually stupid enough to actually do something like that, of course.
This country is so weird. It's technically supposed to operate like fifty or so independent nations all being governed by a single federal entity, but everyone just kind of goes along with the whole, "We're one nation," thing, treating states as other countries would treat regions or provinces.
