No they don't receive tips.

It's also not as easy as just raising the minimum wage. That would just lead to people being laid off and the remainder worked harder to make up for it. Change needs to hit companies right in their profits, basically force them to adhere to new standards without exploiting loopholes to keep, or increase, their current profit.

I can say that, on occasion, we receive tips.

That is, there is this one regular customer who comes through drive thru every morning at around 9:30 and gives $1 top to whoever is working the windows. If there is more than one person working the window (the back dt booth usually has someone on cash and someone taking orders, and the front booth usually has someone handing out food and someone making drinks) they have to split the tip to 50 cents each.

Also the usual "Keep the penny", which adds up to about $.75 if you're on the DT cash drawer for your full 8.5 hour shift.

Wage reviews are every six months, also. You can get an increase of $.15, $.25, or $.35 depending on how good of an employee you are/tolerant of fucktarded human beings you are.

Jesus, I will never understand how McDonalds employees dont kill themselves. Shitty work for basically no pay, and you have to deal with the absolute dredges of humanity all day every day. I mean, I get that work isnt supposed to be fun, but thats like, a motivation to remain unemployed.

Some stores are worse than others.

I've worked at four different McDonalds.

The one I've worked the most at I worked at for 1 year, then it closed to be rebuilt to the new McDonalds look (trying to get away from the horrible 90s look they used to all have), during that time all employees were given the option to go on leave, or work at one of the other five or so stores owned by the same two guys. All of those stores have the same standards of service (set by the McDonalds corporation) and the same standards of employees (set by the two owners). They are all very nice places to work, the managers aren't afraid of telling people off if they treat us like shit.

While I was at uni, I worked at a different McDonalds owned by different people about 3 hours away from the other ones I've worked at.

THAT was absolute shit. The service, the state of the place, the employees and management, jeez. McDonalds horror stories come from places like that. I believe I posted several times about that place in the minties thread.

Edit: When last semester ended I went back to work at the rebuilt McDonalds, and it's fine and usually the only trouble comes from a few customers who think they're hot shit.

I never got why customers act like that. Youre at a friggin MCDONALDS, its as low as you can get on the restaurant scale without eating out of a Red Lobster dumpster, do they expect 5 star service and a personal waiter?

I thought it was against corporate policy for McDonalds employees to accept tips, at least I remember my friend being told that by his manager when he worked there.

Then again, the manager was an asshole.

Basically it all comes down to what the managers and/or franchisee decide on what the rule is, and even then whether or not they enforce it or the crew care enough about the rule to turn down tips (fact: they don't).

It's not so much a rule as it is a socially-enforced suggestion, and only for "service" professions. McDonalds doesn't count but waitressing in Red Robin would. Though for people who get tips there's another set of laws that permits the business to pay them way below minimum wage and let the tips make up for the rest. If it doesn't make up for the rest they're supposed to pay the difference but take a guess how often that happens when there's no one enforcing it.

The only fast food joint with a tip service is Subway, that I know of.

I have yet to see a tip jar at Subway. Seen one at Coldstones but that's more voluntary than "required" like it is for restaurants so I don't count it.

The rule is to tip for waiters and waitresses. At McDonalds/fast food whatever place, A) you're expecting something quick, and B) you get the bare minimum of facetime with the person.

It's different for servers, who are going to be personally helping you with almost anything you need. They take your order, they give you refills, the check up and make sure everything is going well. It's not like running a cash register, they're personally making sure everything is good for you.

Now, if there's a tip jar and you have cash you can spare and you know the food is good, I'm of the opinion that come on at least drop a dollar in don't be a dickwad. But otherwise it's an entirely different beast.
