I see, that makes much more sense.

Seismology is a very inaccurate science, true, but with that in mind they should have known that it could have still been dangerous. Some blame does rest on the scientists.
If it turns out the scientists didn't properly do their jobs, they should be fired, not put in jail. You don't charge a doctor for manslaughter for making a mistake leading to the death of a patient.

Except for those doctors that do get charged with manslaughter for killing their patients.
The A in this case stands for Armageddon. As in, Armageddon a boner because this plane has a fucking HOWITZER sticking out of it.

That's only in rare cases like unauthorised euthanasia or wilful negligence as far as I know.

Murder requires evident forethought.

Which would be the case with unauthorised euthanasia though.

Back to the point, it's wrong for these Italian scientists to be charged with manslaughter, and it's even worse that they were actually found guilty.

People being thrown in jail for not being able to predict the future. What is this, the Middle Ages?
Does anyone know whether they at least made a serious mistake or something?

From what I can glean from the news outlets, the scientists had the data, and the data essentially said that "an earthquake is unlikely, but at the same time it is not impossible".

And I guess if they had evacuated and it wasn't a quake they'd get fired for all the economic damage they caused. Fantastic.

Yeah, it's a load of crap. There should never be catch-22 situations like that in occupational fields that contain unknown variables.

Well I hope Italy enjoys not having seismologists at all or at least shitty ones, because I don't think anyone in their right mind would work under those conditions again.

An airport in Sendai (Japan) was closed down after construction uncovered a WWII-era bomb.
