Re: The Current Events Thread
I see, that makes much more sense.
Burn 'em to shreds, tear 'em to ashes.
Re: The Current Events Thread
If it turns out the scientists didn't properly do their jobs, they should be fired, not put in jail. You don't charge a doctor for manslaughter for making a mistake leading to the death of a patient.somepartsareme wrote:As far as I heard the Italian scientists are being persecuted for announcing that there was no need to evacuate after the initial tremors. Seismology is a very inaccurate science, true, but with that in mind they should have known that it could have still been dangerous. Some blame does rest on the scientists.

Except for those doctors that do get charged with manslaughter for killing their patients.
Re: The Current Events Thread
That's only in rare cases like unauthorised euthanasia or wilful negligence as far as I know.Exeres wrote:Except for those doctors that do get charged with manslaughter for killing their patients.

Murder requires evident forethought.
Re: The Current Events Thread
Which would be the case with unauthorised euthanasia though.

Re: The Current Events Thread
Back to the point, it's wrong for these Italian scientists to be charged with manslaughter, and it's even worse that they were actually found guilty.
Burn 'em to shreds, tear 'em to ashes.
Re: The Current Events Thread
People being thrown in jail for not being able to predict the future. What is this, the Middle Ages?
Does anyone know whether they at least made a serious mistake or something?

Re: The Current Events Thread
From what I can glean from the news outlets, the scientists had the data, and the data essentially said that "an earthquake is unlikely, but at the same time it is not impossible".
Burn 'em to shreds, tear 'em to ashes.
Re: The Current Events Thread
And I guess if they had evacuated and it wasn't a quake they'd get fired for all the economic damage they caused. Fantastic.

Yeah, it's a load of crap. There should never be catch-22 situations like that in occupational fields that contain unknown variables.
Burn 'em to shreds, tear 'em to ashes.
Re: The Current Events Thread
Well I hope Italy enjoys not having seismologists at all or at least shitty ones, because I don't think anyone in their right mind would work under those conditions again.
