This is not a cure. This is also not a stem cell advance. This guy had cancer and he got a bone marrow transplant from someone who had natural (fairly rare) genetic trait that provides resistance to HIV.
This would be like curing diabetes with a pancreas transplant, except that the donor has to share all of your markers, but also have been struck by lightning at some point in their lives. The numbers are against you.
For this to evolve into a workable treatment would require that every HIV positive person find a viable bone marrow donor who also happens to carry the CCR5 mutation. Since we have a hard enough time finding regular bone marrow donors for regular cancer patients I do not imagine that bone-marrow transplant HIV cures will ever be the next big thing.
So what have we learned here? Only that introducing the CCR5 trait into an already infected individual does convey resistance and (possibly) a cure, but there continues to be no viable method for introducing the new genetic material. Also, this has absolutely jack shit to do with stem cell research funding.
We should be funding stem cell research because it's a fucking important field of research in therapeutic and regenerative medicine, not because of some overblown story about a unicorn in the woods cure for a single man's HIV infection.
there will be a small handful of HIV patients over the next couple decades who might benefit from this, but the real cure is still quite distant for the general population.
