My friend and I were talking about cosplay and gijinkas this morning. There's a convention coming up in the Fall down in New Orleans that we're all hopefully planning on attending. This would be the second time I've cosplayed, the first being a simple closet cosplay. At first I was thinking about displaying an OC Pokemon trainer, but I later settled on doing a female Nidoran cosplay because I thought it'd be a fresh idea and I really like Nidoran. c:

Then I got to thinking. I've looked up some pictures of people who've already cosplayed as such and noticed that most of the good-looking ones show a bit of skin (thighs, to be exact). Now, I myself have some difficulty wearing short skirts or high-cut shorts. I just feel very uncomfortable in them because of my figure.
To elaborate, I have a large bottom. It's funny because although I wear an A-cup bra, I have a "black woman's butt", as my friends say. This gives me some trouble in cosplaying since the vast majority of characters available are all skinny as twigs with no junk in the trunk. All I need help with is: how can I pull off a cosplay with a thick bottom half?

daisies YOU TO HELL SQUARE!

These people...
Holy shit man...

They're dressed up as the official artwork for the Dark/Dark class changes (& Kevin's dark/light) of the heroes of Seiken Densetsu 3!

Going clockwise from top left:
Lise as a Fenrir Knight
Hawk as a Night Blade
Duran as a Duelist
Carlie as an Evil Shaman
Angela as a Magus (scantily clad alert)
Kevin as a Death Hand (He'd be a Dervish if he was dark/dark)

Of course, looking at this image of cosplayers reminds me that square never did and never will have SD3 released internationally.

Dress for your body. I cannot stress this enough. You don't have to be incredibly thin or fit to pull off a successful cosplay, but if you don't create a cosplay to compliment your figure the ensemble will be unflattering and will appear sloppy. Don't worry about making your cosplay "sexy", don't feel forced to show skin. Focus on making a costume you'll have fun wearing!

If you want I can help you come up with a concept that will work for your figure, just send me a PM if you'd like the help.

Also, be confident! It's hard, but confidence really does go a long way. If you're self-conscious about yourself, it'll show. When I went to NYCC there were girls of aaall shapes and sizes cosplaying - and hell, one of the best Poison Ivy cosplayers I saw was a chunky, curvaceous chick. Her cosplay was well-designed, fit her body well (which is hard to pull off since it's practically all form-fitting) and her confidence showed. A lot of people had her in photo shoots.

I remember that! It was really well done.

Haha yeah, she was great.

I also forgot to mention that, for comparison's sake, there was another Poison Ivy cosplayer; really thin, fit chick whose outfit pretty much consisted of thin panties with ivy leaf pasties on her body (no bra :s ). Even though she definitely had a great figure, her cosplay looked trashy and, well, slutty. All the attention she recieved was from creepers. Meanwhile, the cosplayer I mentioned had a lot of professional photographers taking her picture (she was with a fantastic Joker and Harley Quinn, too).

All that matters is that you put the time and effort into making a wonderful cosplay that you'll have fun with.

EDIT: Here is Ms. Curvy Ivy

If I ever find some gloves for my Spy TF2 cosplay would anyone be interested in Gimping/Photoshopping me into one of the teams?

Also what does Cosplay mean, is it a mixture of costume and play?

Jood job on guessing it.

Yes.
It's a japanese thing. They like to make new words for stuff by shortening jumbles of words.

There is a common misconception that cosplay originated in Japan, when it's actually an emulation of the costuming phenomenon that was present in western culture around fifty years ago. The Japanese term for it was just popularized because it's simple and catchy.

I think the tentacle hair masking device covered up part of her jaw so it looks kinda weird.
