Besides, at least on my screen, my icon is behind everyone else's.

Icons like Oracle's nearly cover up people like stu_pidasl, when I'm looking at the US. It doesn't matter if you can zoom in to see more closely, because I can't tell if they're there or not. It is slightly annoying as well.

You could always click their name. It kind tells you where they are.
