Quilava is suffering for a rare disease upon which he needs volts of electricity sent into his brain every few hours so it doesn't 'shut down' on itself. The trainer, not wanting his Quilava to be embarrassed by the circular plates attached to his head, made a plastic covering over the metal bar in order to make them look like head phones. You can tell because there is no cord attached to the device that would be able to plug in to listen to music.

nah, I actually saw a picture of them on the Pokemon thread way before the article was published. If I remember correctly: it was when someone was complaining that Woobat was freaky because it didn't have eyes, and I said that the heart-thing was his nose, and that its eyes were under those tuffs of hair.
