Wife beaters use to be called undershirts.
I wore them alot when I'd go out for long periods of time, they were form fitting and soaked up a good amount of sweat.

yeah, they're undershirts, so as expected it's pretty unclassy to wear them alone in public, aside from for exercise or physical labor or such
