Good choice, that will actually get you a career.

Yeah degrees in video game production are a joke. It's highly likely you won't get a job and should the off chance ever happen that you get hired by a video game company, it's because they were looking for an engineer.

Re: All topics unimportant enough to not create a thread for
Engineering is awesome, good choice.

It's like math, but LOUDER.

Re: All topics unimportant enough to not create a thread for
I still have no clear idea what I want to do for a career.
I want to go into entertainment, but I have no clue at all on what I would do or how I'm going to do it.
If I get a career, I want it to be something I actually want to do.
I'm going for a degree in Interactive Systems Design, so at least that covers most of my bases.
Whatever happens, happens. I'll work around it I guess.

Do you have an idea of where you wanna go? Seems like a shameless plug, but I know my university (SMU) has both a great engineering school (its why I picked this university even though I changed majors later because whoops I suck at engineering) and a graduate school in video game design and the like. Obviously since thats grad school you don't need to think about it now, but I dunno it's cool to get their newsletters. *shrug* They're pretty successful at churning out video game creators, from what I know.Need_Runes4 wrote:I am almost a High School Senior looking for a good college/university. Since I was a Freshman, I've been looking into a career involving the production of videogames.
Now that I've been seriously thinking it over, I'm really interested in engineering.
Also if you go into computer engineering/computer science or the like you still might have a shot at the video game world and still be prepared in case that falls through. Don't listen to the debbie downers, follow your dreams. Just be realistic about it and have a backup plan. :U

Henderson State University is the most likely choice for me right now, I've visited the campus and met a few of the staff and students. My grandmother's house is less than a mile away, and it's not a very expensive school for in-state students.
It's a Liberal Arts School, what ever that may mean.
Whelp, their "Pre-Engineering" degree does not exsist.

A degree/certificate in game design is useless as they hire on talent/skill.
You could be self-taught and get a superjob as long as you have an amazing portfolio.
Take some programming courses as electives and practice up maybe.

From what I've seen, when looking for jobs most places aren't looking for specific majors, just specific skills and work ethic, and they'll train you for anything else you need to know. While in college you're gonna have to be on the lookout for opportunities to get experience: internships, job fairs, etc.
Liberal Arts schools usually don't have a lot of science/engineering programs. Depends on the school, but I doubt that's what an aspiring engineer would be looking for.

By the way, I got my acceptance letter a few days ago.
Hurrah.

Re: All topics unimportant enough to not create a thread for
The only career I seem to have some interest in is computers. Computer repairs is what I might consider doing seeing as how they're quite frequent in todays society.
Too bad the last college I went to I flunked in and I don't really know any other one.

You don't need any fancy education to repair computers.
My friend taught himself everything and got a job right out of high school.
(This is the same guy that I'm collaborating with to make this mod I've been talking about.)
