Heh, today is 4/20, and you know you can tell if someone is high by their eyes. So the seniors of my highschool thought it would be clever to have "SENIOR SUNGLASSES DAY". Of course our principal caught on and banned sunglasses today.

It is written somewhere that we receive student licenses for Adobe softwares once we get our degree. I have no idea how this works. Does this mean I will no longer be able to use the other ones unless I buy a new license...?

It depends on the software? I know that Adobe's ~student~ versions are the exact same as regular ones just discounted for students and with no extra weird licensing stuff. But Autodesk products, at least if you do the free student thing, you get the full version but you can't sell anything you make with it so you have to buy the full thing later if you want to develop stuff. If you get the real 3DS Max and AutoCAD I will be IMMENSELY jealous because $1,250 is gonna HURT when we release this game and I have to actually buy Max

Yeah our principal did something like that too. Only instead of sunglasses it was not wearing shoes to promote homeless awareness or something.

The software is a pretty sweet deal, the computers not so much.
Either way, I would give a university that requires me to buy shit for $2200+ just to get enrolled a big FU.

I understand what most of the hardware specifications mean but I can't tell whether it's good or not.
The only available PC is a HP EliteBook 8650w, Intel Core i7-2630QM QuadCore 2.0 GHz, with 4Go of RAM (can go up to 16), a 500 Go hard drive (7200 rpm), a 1980x1080 15,6" LCD monitor. The graphics card is a 2 Go, AutoDesk-certified NVIDIA Quadro 1000M. How is that?

It's overkill for pretty much anything except maybe the 3D modelling software.
Price wise it should be good for what it is, but you don't NEED that for what you're buying it for.

Go with the PC. All you pay the extra $800 for on a Mac is the logo. There is no difference between the hardware installed in a Mac or PC, they're both Foxcom, they both fail randomly, and at least with Windows you can change some things while Mac is a giant hardass about customization. Though you said you want Linux so you can do that easier with Windows as well.

Also, the bit about Macs having viruses has never been true. It's just that until the iPhone/iPad surge, less than 5% of the market had Macs. They're not immune and never were. They just weren't worth the time. Now? Well, the incidences a week or so ago prove that the market is now big enough to attract attention. Just when I get the hang of ZBrush, I have to put scales on this bugger.
By default, ZBrush only lets you undo 4 times.
I need to perform 10 moves in order to get an idea of how that particular brush looks.
I had to spend 5 mins restarting ZBrush every time.

Only now, after wasting my time, have I discovered how to change it.
