All topics unimportant enough to not create a thread for
Re: All topics unimportant enough to not create a thread for
My university sent me a message to tell me I HAVE to buy a laptop from them. I only have three choices: a Mac for $2470, the very same Mac but with a bigger screen for $2730, or a PC with similar hardware for $1600. They're pushing macs because "Mac has no viruses" and can run Windows via BootCamp. Yeeeeeah. An OS I won't use because I'll be on an emulator all the time is definitely worth $800.

That sounds remarkably illegal.
Re: All topics unimportant enough to not create a thread for
Why would you HAVE to buy a laptop from a university?

And it's not "Macs don't get viruses."
It's Macs don't have viruses, Right?

Pretty much, but it's a very stable OS because they can control the hardware that goes with the software.

Stable?
My mac crashes when i open iTunes, an application made specifically for it, and comes packaged with it.
My mac once crashed before logging in.
It crashed 4 times yesterday.

Quit downloading so much hipster porn.

Exceptions always exist, stable doesn't mean it can't get fucked up.
Oh, it was 4/20 today, completely forgot about it.

If they're pushing Macs, then why more expensive?

I'm not sure but they sound very serious about it. You also have to buy software packs from the university. It seems to be a condition to be accepted. I have no idea what it would cost normally, but the software pack looks like a nice deal:Gryewolf wrote:Ahaha you don't actually have to right?
Illustrator CS5, Photoshop CS5, InDesignCS5, Acrobat 9 Pro
Windows 7 Pro, Office Standard
AutoCAD, Revit Architecture, 3D Studio Max, Ecotect (2011)
Google SketchUp Pro8
SketchUp Podium 2
Rhinoceros 4.0 and Grasshopper
Dr.Frame 2D/3D and Dr.Beam
Total: $875 (it all comes with updates for the next 3 years, except for Windows 7 and Office)

If this is a shot at me using a mac I feel the need to point out that it is school-assigned.Exeres wrote:Quit downloading so much hipster porn.

Re: All topics unimportant enough to not create a thread for
All adobe products at CS5 are $300+
3DS Max is over $1,000
AutoCAD I'm sure is about the same price
Windows 7 Professional is a couple hundred
Office Standard is like $150/200
I want this software pack :c If not just for Illustrator, Photoshop and Max. $875 is an AMAZING deal provided you're getting the full (ie not student) versions of all these programs

You and three others.
Re: All topics unimportant enough to not create a thread for
It is written somewhere that we receive student licenses for Adobe softwares once we get our degree. I have no idea how this works. Does this mean I will no longer be able to use the other ones unless I buy a new license...?shazza wrote:I want this software pack :c If not just for Illustrator, Photoshop and Max. $875 is an AMAZING deal provided you're getting the full (ie not student) versions of all these programs
I intend to install Linux (probably Mint Debian Edition) on my laptop.Sol Reaper wrote:Pssh I use Linux bitches. This Thread wrote: Implied Mac vs. Windows
