I like having all the unique modifiers and skill checks from 3.5, as well has having freedom to make up random attacks and to just have to roll for them. The set attack list is fine for when you're DM-ing, but it kind of gets annoying when you're in a long battle and you're just like, "Well, I guess I'll use my at-will AGAIN..."
As DM, I'm going to let anything fly. If someone thinks it would be a good idea to fling shit at an enemy, just roll Dexterity or something. This is what house rules are for.

Should I aim for a total party kill in the first campaign or what?

Many many flaws. Not saying don't like it. Love what you want to love man, but it did very little right.

I've come up with a great movie script. Or tagline and title. That's half the script, right?

Awful people can be interesting, though. Look at Mad Men. Everybody in the show is a terrible person, you don't want to go hang out and grab a brewski with Draper - but it's still very engaging to see him do what he does. The cast in DA2 was so one-note.

Give them some cannon fodder minions to beat up, give out some experience, and just when they're feeling accomplished and bad-booty-like, bring out a rat ogre with a poison cannon and kick their sorry asses. That's how my best friend killed my character off when he was mad at me. I was walking by myself for bodaciously half a block, and suddenly - OOP, SOLO FIGHT TIME. TOO BAD YOU'RE A TINY HALFLING WITH NO STRENGTH AND YOUR ANIMAL COMPANION IS ELSEWHERE, TEEHEE.

When I DM'd next I made sure that HIS animal companion abandoned him almost immediately after a bad roll. I'm terrible.

I think... I think I want to make them destroy themselves, manipulate them into splitting the party, fight amongst themselves, maybe they'll do all the dirty work for me.

NO, I don't want them all to get rustled off and not want to play anymore. I don't know. I'M NOT A DM, SOMEONE HELP ME.

No, they'll never split up. It's way too much trouble for you as a DM anyhow.

Give them a basic mission/reward scenario to start with. Like, they're all in the tavern when the town's rich man walks in begging for help because some farting orcs have kidnapped his pussy son (who later snaps out during the final battle and kills like 5 orcs). Just thing of dumb things and add in ridiculous humor, sarcasm, and too much cliched action stuff as possible. It just turns into a game of who can describe the more epic attack and how many jokes can you crack in one battle.

don't split the party, never split the party

unless you foresee this as being a short thing, take it slow and easy; too often DMs try starting a campaign in some grandiose fashion and it all just collapses right away

It would seem WotC took a hint from Pathfinder's success, and will hopefully much improve 5e

Theatrics are the way to go.
Try to kill them, but not too hard.
Build up a bit of a story and throw challenging, yet beatable monsters at them.
Maybe get your kills from traps and puzzles that test the player and not just the character.
That way they can't blame you when they die.

Story is the key point to any campaign.
A friend of mine made us run a 'Boss Rush' sort of campaign.
It was absolutely horrendous.

Have colourful NPCs and interesting boss characters.
Maybe take hints from your friends' favorite shows/games.

You'll do fine.
