It's a good way to test people's faith too; I mean - if they really believe the world is gonna end tomorrow - why do they need any of their cheddar or possessions?

Yeah, you pull enough random numbers/dates/figures out of a book and you can come up with an equation that gives you a result that you want.

A lot of the atheists in the media only seem to be noteworthy because they go out of their way to antagonise the religious looneys.
It's funny that I share my surname with him but I'm not sure if I'm even related to him (distant or otherwise).

Mostly because, like Exeres said, a lot of us are perfectly content to distance ourselves from the extremists. Not that it does much when people still manage to lump us together. I'm getting a little tired of the Westboro Baptist Church claiming to be Christian.

Why has no one realised that the way to stop all these end of the world predictions is to ignore them and not give them media coverage?
