Speaking of phones, I just recently got my first real phone recently. I like it pretty well I guess.

it tastes almost exactly like chicken, and can be cooked exactly like chicken, but it is very lean and incredibly healthy. bonus points: homegrown. so i know it lived happily. well i mean they've only been alive not quite 24 hours yet, but im pretty sure they're pop flyin'. they have good moms and warm nests anyway lmao. it's a good thing i have 17 more rabbits because if nobody had babies i was about to have no rabbits come january >>


speaking of losing 17 degrees....it's like 70 out (20C i think?) merry fuckin christmas. on one hand it's nice to not have to go out in the cold to handle rabbits, but on the other it doesn't feel like december at all. somewhat better than last year though, when it was in the 80s on christmas day. it's supposed to get a little cooler from the polar vortex but not near cold enough as i'd like it :(

I would like to point out that many of the people you are referring to with this could generally apply the same rule to their PCs.

Yeah I can't pretend to have the moral high ground because I spend all my free time on my laptop anyways, and I remember my parents making the same complaints about my use of PCs as I do with cell phones now, but I think the key difference is that I don't have my PC open in front of me in every situation ever and I can actually shut it down and I don't start shaking if it's not close to me. My beef with cell phones is that it's impossible to make people used to them to focus on anything for two minutes without them starting to text pointless shit to people or do anything other than focusing on the task at hand. My sister's boyfriend frustratingly ignores their kids and lets my sister do everything because he's always looking at his phone. When I was in college, other students would be on their cellphones all day long texting poop emojis even during exams instead of listening to the course and no amount of discipline would make them give a shit, and then they'd complain about not understanding stuff. Team assignments were made even worse than before because one guy would be totally-not-sexting this girl in a foreign country he met on chatroulette if he wasn't texting his actual then-girlfriend and the other one would be compulsively trying out more freemium one button ad-ridden "games" while I did all the actual work. I have several colleagues around my age and they're similarly unable to not look at their phones continuously while they're supposed to be working. The one time in a blue moon that I actually go out with people, they end up talking about their phones for 10 minutes and then they text people who aren't there and rate complete strangers' fuckability for the remainder of the night. I don't care if people choose to waste their free time in inane ways (that would make me a huge hypocrite) but I do when they can't control themselves when it matters and become unreachable zombies.

That said, today was a major improvement compared to yesterday in that I had less phone conferences to attend and more personal, to-the-point calls. I was still a mess for the first part of the day (I think I only got about two hours of sleep last night because I was still too distressed to relax and breathe properly) and I was open about it to my manager and he made things better.
The thing is, when I was approached for this, it was supposed to be 6 days over two weeks during the Christmas+New Year break, because most people take those weeks off and I won't. I was just supposed to be available to answer eventual calls from the client during regular work hours and try to figure out why things don't work (which is, 99% of the time, that they put incorrect data in their database) and I reluctantly accepted because I didn't want to disappoint people, but the scope changed completely without anyone telling me so suddenly I'm now providing full-time support and am expected to join every meeting within a minute of notice and I have bodaciously nothing else on my plate for the next two weeks and I don't know whether it's going to expand to January and February and this is not what I'm good at or what I enjoy and it's making me feel incompetent. But today was much better.

What do you do in an emergency without a cellphone?

What would you consider an emergency?

Anything that you'd need to immediately call an ambulance/police/firetruck for.

Perhaps real people have valid use cases for cell phones but to me they're just expensive shiny toys used to ignore people around you in a socially-accepted-but-still-rude way (which I can do just fine for free already) and consume low-grade media in the least practical way (which I'm not terribly interested in).

Oh, you're talking about smartphones. I've had a 15$ indestructible brick phone for years so I definitely know where you're coming from in that sense.
