i get to watch sam riegel shill in real time
I'm lucky in that most of the people in my group all work at the same company, so we've got the same days off.Syobon wrote:I finally found a DnD group last year (well, Pathfinder actually). It's been fun but it's hard to do regular sessions with every one being so busy.
Speaking of D&D, it took me five goddamn months, but I've finally caught up to present with Critical Role. Got through last week's episode today which means I finally get to watch tonight's stream in real time.

I've been watching it on occasion (well listening to it in the background is more like it) but at this rate it will bodaciously take me forever to catch up.

Everyone keeps paying me compliments at work and I can't think of anything I did to deserve this. This might sound bad but I'm not used to being praised that much????

That's totally a thing, not being used to people being nice to you. When I went from unemployment and being stuck inside all day to my first job, I remember being bewildered that my coworkers actually asked how my day was going and cared about who I was as a person. I was like "wut? Common courtesy???? What is????"Rinoko wrote:Everyone keeps paying my compliments at work and I can't think of anything I did to deserve this. Or my favorite:Cori wrote:Playing DND when you're an adult is like:
DM: "Is everyone free on Saturday?"
"I'm free all week : ) "
"I have to work on Saturday, what about Wednesday?"
"I work on Wednesday"
"I'm free on Tuesday and Friday"
"I'm free on Monday and Sunday"
DM: ".............what about Thursday?"
"Thursday I'm out of town."
DM: "......guess we'll try next week then."
It's made even worse when you're playing it online with people who live in different time zones.
DM: "Hey guys, what's up?"
"Hey, we were all here at the same time and were thinking about tabletop tonight, but you didn't show up."
DM: "I was out for the day, you know, work/school/that thing I do every Thursday."
"It's fine. We were just really excited to do a pick up session for fun. We're also available tomorrow."
DM: "I can't do tomorrow, sorry."
"I guess we'll never get to play. Are you sure you can't get out of it?"
DM has got enough worries without the players hyping up stuff while their busy and getting disappointed about it. It's bad enough DMs have to wrangle schedules for people without having to mess their own schedule up because the players managed to talk amongst themselves for once. Had this happen to me a bit with my DMing but also had it when I was the schedule wrangler for a DM friend who had to work 50 hour weeks.

One of the worst things about being aware of society's problems (such as ableism) is realising one of the comedians you liked is rater offensive about the stuff.
George Carlin does make me go :/ quite a bit now

Yep. The genius of his comedy is hard to appreciate when you realize he's also punching down on some people who don't deserve it.

Agreed. I feel the same way about some of Robin Williams' routines; while I love the guy's work and will happily listen to any of his routines any day, some of his stuff really shows its age. I just recently watched a standup routine he performed on Broadway back in 2002, and as hilarious as it was, I found myself cringing and rolling my eyes a lot.

I've personally always enjoyed "offensive" humour. I think it's the combination of shock value and relief that the comedian isn't being serious that tickles my funny bone, similar to how the actual tickle response works(*).
*tickling triggers an instinctive response to check for bugs, the wave of relief when your brain realizes there is no threat triggers the laughter

Re: All topics unimportant enough to not create a thread for
I usually dont like shock humor, but i find there is a difference between it and just maybe...crass? comedians. Shock comedians to me are people like Carlin or Howard Stern who say a lot of offensive or outlandish shit as a "haha i cant believe he said that!" kind of humor. On the oither side of the coin, 80s eddie murphy was VERY cras but I felt like a lot of his humor had actual jokes and not just shock of the sake of shock (not all of it mimd you, he dis take inspiration from Richar Pryor after all). That could also stem from just never listening to a lot of Carlin, but his jokes never connected and most crass/shock humor is 99% miss. Its really all in the delivery for me, I'm rarely ever offended due to hravy desensitization thanks to growing up in certain online communities so I guess a lot of the "WHOA cant believe he said THAT" just doesnt work for me?

Yeah, just base shock humour isn't very entertaining, there should be some wit involved. I don't watch stand-up comedy much though and when I do it's Dutch-speaking comedians so I'm not really familiar with the people you guys are talking about.
