There's practically no way to fairly judge a piece of art. Most big contests do things like skip over people with a lot of experience to be "fair", although it isn't fair to them.
I won an art contest in like, 3rd grade.

It pisses me off, because my parents insisted hanging it on the wall, and it looks every bit as terrible as you might imagine a 3rd grader's art would look like.

EDIT: Actually, now that I think about it, they probably over-interpreted it as having some sorta deep meaning. The picture was a drawing of like, a really poorly drawn 2D skyline of skyscrapers. And I went all MC Escher speggehti style with the towers zigzagging into a giant knot, instead of being straight.

As a kid, I was just thinking "Drawing a straight building is boring," and I happened to think MC Escher drew cool looking things.

I'm not soulless. I have plenty of souls. They're just not mine.

I agree that it isn't fair. People who really worked hard to get a piece to look as professional as art can get should be the ones to qualify to win. Those that can't because they aren't yet a very high level in art should not bitch about how "unfair" it is because they aren't as good. They should see it as a way to think "Ohk I didn't do well in this contest but if I can improve for the time being, maybe I'll have a better shot at it in the next contest!"

While this can lead to the same good artists just winning or being a finalist in the contests again and again.

When it comes down to the finalists that are equally good though, it's all about the judge's preference. :I

Oh man I will never hold a contest that shit gets complicated.

'Slant' is the term normally used for where a work is additionally judged based on some factor other than the final product. Generally speaking, it's neither a good thing nor a bad thing; they can each be argued to be fairer than the other. For example:
Judging the work without slant means that the best piece really does win.
But judging the work with slant means that the more amateur people who put in loads of effort in can still be easily beaten by the far more experienced artist who put hardly any effort in, and allows more of a chance for more rookie artists to actually stand a chance in a competition over the far-more-experienced professionals.
Airigh wrote:But, really, I don't think there's really any fair way to judge art,
There is. I mean, for big-time competitions, because of all the added implications and subtleties in the works, it's much harder, but for smaller scale competitions (which I presume is what you're talking about), it's largely safe to ignore such things and focus on plain 'what you see' judging methods, which are far more clear-cut!

People who chew with their mouth open, especially if they're parents.
I want to punch them in the face so hard they can no longer chew.
*ISSUES*

Oh and also…jerks who think you have to do their work for them.
Sometimes I wonder why is that ball getting bigger and then it hits me

This one guy in my writing class loves to reitirate (sp?) his sentences when answering a question. For a question that would take 5 seconds to answer he takes 2 minutes on. ANSWER THE QUESTION AND SHUT THE HELL UP. :shakefist:

My car stalled out at intersections three times today. Then I got really freaked out because of it and the stress made my foot cramp up, and it hurt so bad that I couldn't move it. o.O

...It was kindof a horrifying combination.

1) Chasing down routing units in Medieval 2: Total War, especially when you have two strong squads of cavalry chasing down the enemy general who just happens to have this aura that makes all my troops oblivious to him.

2) Jerusalem in Medieval 2: Total War, the only thing its good for is the massive surplus gained from looting it. When captured, it quickly rebels and riots destroy its buildings

3) Internet cutting out for an hour.

We have really shitty luck with apartments or something.

Okay, so, we found a new apartment to look at. Got an appointment. Saw the apartment and it was even bigger and (somewhat) nicer than the previous one, for cheaper. It was also ridiculously hot in the building, like an oven, which is lovely during the miserable winter weather we're having.

We get the forms, yadda yadda yadda, tell them we will fill it out, get the cheddar and all other necessary forms and get back to them by Thursday.

uhm okay today is friday what happened Star?

WELL I'M GLAD YOU ASKED, ME!

We go there and no one answers at the office. So that's not good - this is exactly like the previous place. But Tuxedo Mask had lived here in the past and said "Well, they often left to go to the restaurant near here, maybe there's where they are." So we left a message and told them to call us back. No call last night but that's okay, it was going on the evening and maybe they didn't get back till they thought it was too late to be phoning.

It is just unfortunate that yesterday Tuxedo Mask didn't work overtime because we had specifically set aside time for this meeting... But okay, he gave me his cellphone, they have our numbers, if they call I can answer. His grandparents have agreed to drive me down there if the meeting is arranged before Tuxedo Mask gets home and I know what to do.

Soooo here's hoping they call us back today, because if not today, the only time we're both *hopefully* available is tomorrow, but even then, I know I have a staff meeting at eight in the morning, and work schedules for the week are distributed then, and I might actually work that night. Tuxedo Mask works during the day from 6 to 3, and then I work at night from 5 to 11 (unless of course, they don't send me home at 8, which they've always done the past few days =_=; ). If I hadn't JUST started working, we'd probably be cool to make a meeting any time after 3 because we'd both be available, but since I just started, Tuxedo Mask and I agree it'd look really bad to already start calling in favours to get time off just because the landlord(s) decided to go to a restaurant when we had told them we would be coming by...

sigh.

Oh, and then we found out the apartment went on the market because the current tenant died.

uhm what

And then we ALSO found out we can't move in immediately because his stuff is still in there because his family hasn't come to clean it out yet

Going on 7 PM and still no call back...

I saw Beyond Good and Evil for A DOLLAR in a Wal-Mart bargain bin.

Actually, I say over 10 copies of Beyond Good and Evil for a dollar in the Wal-Mart bargain bin.

And one copy of Jak 2 for less than 10.

My face couldn't decide if it wanted to be angry or sad. ("HOW DARE THEY! ):<" "... Are my favourite games that shitty? )':")
