THE FUCKING MAYANS DIDN'T PREDICT THE APOCALYPSE!
THEY JUST DIDN'T PLAN THAT FUCKING FAR AHEAD!
Also, Maylans are not nearly the first civilisation like it says!

Of course, this is by the same guys as flipping The Day After Tomorrow and Independence Day! Asking for it to be any bit related to the real world is probably against the producers' religion!

Funfax: the Aztecs sacrificed people because without the blood, the gods would get pissy and end their world.

I forget how it goes but when the priests were being 'sterminated by the 18th century Spanish 'sterminators, (ala, Conquistadors, you uninformed lad/lass) predicted that, without their daily sacrifices or ritual sacrifices, the world would end in (probably) 2012.

Oh yeah, and Aztecs would use blunt weapons to capture enemies to 'sterminate them at their altars to their invincible gods (though it was rare that the gods would actually ask for a human blood sacrifice, more along the lines of virgins or just, massive festivals with orgies and hedonism (or in the case of the extremely unfortunate, being flayed and your skin being worn by a priest celebrating new life)). Aztecs who would be sacrificed were often willing, believing they were going to the highest heaven for their selflessness towards their almighties.

tl;dr: Aztecs weren't always dicks.

What would be the point in worrying about it anyway?

If it happens, it happens.

End of the world? Yeah... so... why should I worry about it if I can't stop it happening?

You do realise we're talking about a movie here, right?

The fact I said this.

I was really tired, and for some reason thought this was the pop flyin' thread.

FFFFF-
Aw... well, I temporarily turned this into the pop flyin' Thread.

I was just making a general commentary about the pointlessness of worrying about something that might happen.

I get rustled off with people who get worked up by media frenzies. Years ago it was 'Oh noes! Saddam is gonna bomb us!', today it's more 'Oh noes! Swine Flu is gonna get us!' although there's also the 'Oh noes! North Korea is gonna make the bomb and destroy America and half the world!"

Why worry about what might happen if you couldn't do anything about it if it actually was going to happen anyway?

Speaking of Doomsday prophecies: "The Knowing" with Nicholas Cage.

Great concept, great progression of story line, ending made me want to smack the back of the person's head in the theatre seat in front of me.
