It's a very specific degree at the University of Abertay. It's a 'World Renowned' Computer game design course. There's severeal different routes to take - concept art, final art, 3d modeling, motion capture etc.
I'd probably go for concept art and level design. I'm quite good at character design too.
The only problem is that I fear it's too specific, because even though it increases my chances of entering that particular profession, it tightens my horizons otherwise.

And if I did take the engineering route, I'm not to sure what I'd do with it. I love physics and finding out how things work, but...
...I'm not too sure how I'd want to use it later on in life.
I wouldn't worry too much about your degree limiting you. As long as you know a little about every aspect of the industry, you should have no problems getting a job in whatever area you want (assuming they're hiring).

Its possible but you probably wont be going on lavish cruises every year.
Steven Spielberg, George Lucas, Johnny Depp, and about a bajillion other people would like to disagree.

But if that's all you want in life, then that sucks. :\

It's just... if I didn't get a job with a games development team right away, other careers that require an artistic talent, would probably be more likely to hire someone with an all-encompassing art degree, rather than the one I hope to get.

But maybe I'm just paranoid.

You know those game design courses weren't always around. Current game developers didn't necessarily major in that stuff. I think I heard of one saying that they majored in Biology. As long as you know the stuff and you have the drive to do it why not?

I mean you are what a freshman or so? You still have like a year or so to decide. Choose something that you like and that you may be interesting in doing forever.

Maybe not everyone wants to be filthy rich.

I only want enough to buy nice things, and maybe a plane ticket for my friend in washington to come down here every once in a while.

Exceptions, not everyone is going to be a famous celebrity. Also Spielberg dropped out of college to pursue his career, and Lucas went to a junior college for anthropology and Depp dropped out of high school to become a musician.

I know what you mean, that's why I'm a bit hesitant about picking that course, even though in my heart of hearts, it's what I want to do. Or animation. Or something in the movie industry....

...Yes, I'm very jumbled at the moment. And yeah, I'm in my second last year in high-school, whatever it's called over there, so I've got time to contemplate my descisions.

Taking it wont hurt you when you get there, but make sure its what you want to do. If that is what you want to do then the major is not restrictive, if you think you'll have second thoughts down the road, then try choosing a major that covers everything like a computer science major or something or other. I would look into the major and see if its for a specific type of game design. If you want to do like concept art you probably dont need a game design degree. Also if you want to like help make a physics engine for a game, actually knowing physics would probably help.

I personally always look at all possible careers that will help out in the case of a zombie apocalypse. No offense, but anything in the entertainment industry wouldn't be too helpful right away. :)

They're still in the arts. I wasn't talking about degrees.

And you should take what you really want to take and not worry about cheddar. I look at it this way: even if I never get a job and die poor, I still have that knowledge and got to do something I love. And that's more important than a job.

I hate "THE UNIVERSE" theory, of everything happening just. for. them.

Also re-incarnation. It just annoys me, I don't know why.

Blubber, I would actually advise that course... except that doing Concept Art and Level Design together is not a good idea; level design is more suited to the modellers, not the concept artists. But Concept Art and Character Design go hand in hand though!
Leoj wrote:I just mean its because its a lot easier than science classes (at least comm classes are).
Easier? Oh god no, Arts requires a ridiculous amount of study and assignments! The thing I have against it is that there's hardly any proper jobs available. Half because there aren't a lot of jobs for Arts in the first place, and half because just about everyone who wants to go to college, but no idea what to do, does Arts!

1.) People who quote huge pictures or walls of text that is right above them only to say a few words. Like, 5.
I'm looking at you, Lolita. All the time

B.) FUCKING CRITWRENCHES

Thirdly.) How after playing oblivion for days upon end, I've forgotten how to play TF2.

I keep on going to jump, only to call for a medic.

Do you remember when you were a kid, playing Nintendo and it wouldn’t work? You take the Cartridge out, blow in it and that would magically fix the problem. Every kid I know did that, but how the hell did we all know how to fix the problem?
There was no internet or message boards or FAQs. We just figured it out. Today’s kids haven't got a fucking clue. I mean it too.
