Actually it's pretty useful to do that. Infants have the tendency to grow really freaking fast and a kid who's 35 months old can look so much older than one that's 26. So saying your child is "two years old" can't quite paint a good picture.
It's about as vague as answering someone's question about your age with "In my forties."
