I figured it out.

Since we've made synthetic life, in the future, we create whole new races of animals nicknaming them "Pokemon". These "Pokemon" eventually multiply uncontrollably and outnumber actual animals 5:1. Years later, natural animals are nearly extinct and we're completely fine with it. Giraffes sucked anyway.
