They are. At least in my school they are. Middle and high schools are in the same place, so I can compare. They still suck until they turn sixteen, though.

man in vancouver high school starts in grade 8 so our equivalent of freshmen (9th graders) are actually recognized as human beings at my school

Actually I don't mind freshmen that much, they're just massive pricks at my school.
I've heard tales of the ye olden days when Juniors and Seniors were actually respected by the Freshmen and Sophomores. That doesn't happen anymore.
