Re: Art Thread
Actually, I think your character looks very nice, Zang! I've watched you practice anatomy and proportions over the last year or so, and I think that you've got a decent grip on the basics. You've made a lot of progression. I think that you have enough understanding to be able to exaggerate and stylize your character designs to your will.
If you are aiming for more realistic proportions, then the person's feet and hands are definitely too big, but the way you drew the character looks like the proportions were intentional.

Ah, yes, I was kind of thinking that too. His crotch is really, really tiny for a dude.Clyve wrote:Needs more booty, Zang.
Maybe it's just me, but his lower waist is kind of coming off as almost nonexistant, like his spine was cut off right before reaching the pelvis and then his legs continuing on from there.

Re: Art Thread
oh wow, i completely left the pelvis off of that character.

fixed i think. The hands/feet were done really big on purpose, screwin around with stylizing, didn't work out too well

Re: Art Thread
So I did a sketch of Cut Man [who is taking over my life right now] in Flash and gave myself critiques / pointed out flaws.

Do you guys have anything to add before I advance?
It's mostly based on Ariga style, but I'm not trying to just do that. I'm kind of trying to get a hybrid thing between that and a tiny bit of originality.

Re: Art Thread
My best advice? Study anatomy and proportions from real-life, use references, and practice what you study so you can get a handle on what it is you're actually trying to draw.
I recommend doing some gesture drawing using either irl models in a class or photographs of people. Go to the mall or the library and draw the people you see--real people in real-life settings. Study your hands and feet. Figure out how they work. Study how muscles and bones work together to make a person move the way they do.
You HAVE to learn the basics of drawing before you can start developing your own style. Understanding realism is a prerequisite to stylizing and cartooning.
Here are some good resources for aspiring artists:
http://www.pixelovely.com/gesture/figuredrawing.php
A good tool for gesture drawing.
http://www.posemaniacs.com/
A good source of references for different poses.
You can find books on anatomy and structure in any library or art store, and you can always use yourself for a reference as well. Drawing your own hands and feet is a great way to understand how they work.

Re: Art Thread
Zang, from what I can tell from these two drawings, you make the torsos too short. It looks like the ribcage is directly attached to the pelvis; it works one or two times for making original and distinguished body shapes, but you shouldn't copypasta it too often, using the same body shape is like using the same face.
So this is what I drew for Terraem's birthday. It turned out pretty good, if you ask me. Only thing I'm not pop flyin' with is the composition. The pose isn't dynamic enough for this kind of finger pointing, apart from it I'm really content though.

Re: Art Thread
Thanks! But in all honesty, as long as you keep a sideview they are actually pretty simple. I guess a good tip is to handle them like sharks because of their flat and pointy noses.

I barely post anything but "art" here nowadays. Was planning to whine some in the sad thread too but I can't even bother right now.
