Been wanting to share some stuff out of my sketch book but the comics would take too much explaining so instead I inked a sketch from a little while back.

So I made up a new species. It's an alien monster race that are mostly reptillian and hate pots.

Image

It started by me doing some scribbles that looked a little bit like a monster, so I refined it. The small things coming out of the torso are lesser arms. I drew the first one in a way that it looked like it was kicking a pot I drew over, so yeah~

Yay, an Original Character! :'D

@ Sol: Sure thing, I should probably make up a price sheet like I have been promising for the past year...

@ Willow: Those are some very nice lines and colours! Were the dragon flies meant to look like wangs? Or am I suffering from porn eye?
I really like the geometric trees in the second one. Reminds me of the style they used in the back grounds for Sleeping Beauty(Disney) Really cool stylistic choice.

I have no idea how people do it. For me it just involves a shitload of erasing, and even then I have to use different shades of black

But I did something for it.

Image

It just, still doesn't look right though. The shine looks too much like a headband maybe. Anyone got suggestions?

Okay, so, black hair. I have three characters with black hair and I draw them all the time, and I've developed a way that I think makes their hair look nice and shiny. When you start coloring the hair, don't fill the entire area with black. Draw in individual strands and make sure you leave some of the area where you want a highlight blank.

Here's a slightly older example:

Image

I used pencil, so his hair isn't exactly pitch-black, but I use this technique when I draw digitally, too, so it applies to pure black hair too. There was no erasing involved when I filled in his hair. All I did was establish which areas I wanted to have a highlight and made a note to leave those areas unfilled.

Another, newer example:

The shine is toned down quite a bit, but you can still see it. This is a case where I drew in the highlights after I colored, but all I did was add a few 'strands' of shine. My trick is to be aware of my lightsource and plan the shine according to that, instead of adding a 'band' of shine (I never did like using bands of shine with hair. Personal preference).

I hope this helped? If you want I could make like a small step-by-step thing but I am tired and going to bed so it will have to wait. Basically just try drawing individual strands instead of blocking in the hair color and leave some space for the shine.
