Well, that's their entire purpose. They're intangible objects that serve to reflect the change of relationships, and show the "true feelings" of the person they represented. Kanba showing his tough exterior while his penguin exhibited his base emotions of love and caring, if in extreme perverse ways...

I gave it a 9/10, the visuals were neat and the story was refreshingly new, the characters were enjoyable and overall it was a good experience. It's not fantastically ground-breaking, but you should definitely try it.

Nah, the fingers are just bent backwards to exaggerate the movement. It's not something that's physically feasible without actually applying pressure to the fingers, which is why it looks odd.
