Well to be fair in the Wii U's case it was essentially playing graphical catch-up by replacing a system that was using 11-year-old hardware.

A whole bunch of IMPORTANT PLOT TWISTS require you to at least have a passing familiarity with the plots of the first 2, so I'd recommend you pick up the wii control versions.
